Our yard is usually a really busy place in the summer. Now that winter has come and the snow is on the ground it seems like the activity has really gone up. We are avid bird watchers and have always like to feed the birds. The birds really depend on the bird feeders in the winter because it is so much harder to find food to survive the winter. It is so much fun to watch their activity and to see what kind of visiters we get to our yard.
One of our favorites is the Pilated Woodpecker. They are not very common visitors, typically if anything we usually hear them and not see them. They are the largest of the woodpeckers, about a foot long. If you are familar with Woody Woodpecker as a child, he is a Pilated Woodpecker.
Anyway, we only saw her once on our feeder since we have moved here. We were very happy to see our friend back today twice already and were able to get a few pictures of her. I hope we he will be back throughout the winter so we can enjoy her!

That is a male pilated woodpecker.

The male has the red line around his mouth like a mustache. We didn't see the red line. The female lacks the red line. Maybe the zoom on your computer is better than ours? Let me know...

The Females red poof on the head is also much smaller and part of it is black.
Without a better photo I guess it could go either way.
I am an avid bird watcher and know pretty much each species by sight...
Tell Matt to get you a camera like mine with the 300mm telephoto lense! then you will get a good close up! LOL
